简介：The lead enjoyed by King’s College London at the head of the food science table has narrowed considerably since last year, with Leeds taking over from Surrey as the nearest challenger. King’s had the best grades in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, when two thirds of its submission in nutritional sciences was considered world-leading or internationally excellent. But a dip in student satisfaction has allowed five universities to come closer to King’s than any did last year. Harper Adams University College, the leading post-1992 institution, has the top score for employment, but is restricted to seventh place by relatively low research grades and entry standards. The 94 per cent of Harper Adams graduates going straight into graduate-level jobs or further study is five percentage points higher than the rate at any university. The most satisfied students are at Leeds Metropolitan, ranked 16th overall. The majority of the 33 institutions in the ranking are new universities, although higher entry standards and research grades ensure that their older counterparts fill the top six places. Robert Gordon has overtaken Heriot-Watt as the top university in Scotland, while Queen’s, Belfast, has passed Ulster in Northern Ireland. Cardiff Metropolitan is the only university in Wales to qualify for the food science table. Entry standards have been rising – only two universities in this year’s ranking average less than 250 points – but there were still only four applications per place in 2011. Almost a third of entrants to food science courses arrive with alternative qualifications to A levels. The subjects were in the doldrums in the latter part of the last decade, but have enjoyed big increases in each of the last three years. An 18 per cent rise in 2011 was among the biggest in any subject and the move to higher fees did not prevent another big rise in 2012. Career prospects are good, with more than half of those completing courses going straight into graduate-level jobs and only 8 per cent without work six months after graduation.
