简介：Cambridge has extended its lead over Oxford in general engineering since last year, with the highest entry standards, by far the best employment record and the top grades in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), when 45 per cent of the university’s work was classified as world-leading. For the second year in a row, Greenwich had the best results in the National Student Survey, remaining the leading post-1992 university and moving into the top ten. It is joined there by Nottingham Trent, which did not appear in last year’s table, but is now in the top three for graduate employment. Imperial College is another new entry, joining in third place. Cardiff, in fourth place, remains the top university in Wales, while Strathclyde has overtaken Aberdeen to become the leader in Scotland. As in the specialist branches of engineering, there is an enormous spread of entry grades, from more than 600 points at Cambridge to less than 250 at the foot of the table. Applications were down 3 per cent in March 2012 – less than average for all subjects and a better outcome than in some other branches of engineering. However, there were only four applications per place in 2011, making admissions the least competitive in the engineering disciplines. Nationally, the subject is in the top eight for employment and the top four for starting salaries in graduate jobs, with an average of more than £26,500. Three quarters of all those completing a degree go straight into graduate jobs or further study. It is even in the top three for starting salaries in lower-level jobs.
