简介:Only nursing had attracted more applications than law in March 2012. While other subjects suffered from the introduction of higher fees, law managed a small increase in applications, which totalled more than 90,000. Entry standards reflect law’s popularity: only in medicine do so many universities make such testing demands. Nine universities average more than 500 points and almost a third of the 95 universities have average entry scores of more than 400 points. For the first time, no university slips below 200 points, although the 5.5 applications to each place in 2011 were below average for all subjects. Oxford retains the top place it won from Cambridge two years ago, despite leading the table on only one of the measures: entry standards. Fourth-placed University College London ties with Strathclyde, in 12th place, for the best record for graduate destinations. Aspiring solicitors go on to take the Legal Practice Course, while those aiming to be barristers take the Bar Vocational Course, so it is no surprise that half of all law graduates are engaged in postgraduate study six months after completing a degree. The unemployment rate for law is better than average, at 7 per cent, but the subject is outside the top 20 for early career employment prospects and there are some surprisingly low scores at the bottom of the ranking. Average starting salaries are not as high as many might believe either, partly because of training salaries in law firms and also because only about half of all law graduates find their way into the profession. However, the latest figure is almost £2,000 up on the last edition of the Guide and is at least in the top half of the table for all subjects. Once more, the most satisfied students are not at one of the top universities in the table. For the second year in a row, that distinction goes to Greenwich, in 44th place, with Newcastle, in equal 13th, again registering the next-best score. There were good performances in law throughout the 2011 National Student Survey. Only six universities – and only one of the top 50 – failed to satisfy at least 70 per cent of the undergraduates. The London School of Economics, in third place, achieved the best grades in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, when three quarters of its submission was rated world-leading or internationally excellent. Edinburgh has overtaken both Glasgow and Aberdeen to become the top university in Scotland, while Cardiff is now well clear of the rest in Wales. Oxford Brookes is the leading post-1992 university.以下是2013年times英国大学排名法学专业排名。
